“Hall of Fire” — Stephen Hickman.
Think of this fireplace sculpted by Peter King.  That’d be awesome!

“Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum started ModVic (Modern Victorian) Home Restoration in June 2007 and have now moved onto steampunk Home Design. ModVic’s mission is to authentically restore historic Victorian homes (1850 – 1910) to their original beauty and richness while completely modernizing the home’s systems, functional layout and conveniences for the family of today… Bruce and Melanie also love the steampunk design aesthetic of combining the best of Victorian high design and craftsmanship with modern functionality and usefulness.” — source (Steampunk Workshop)

I’m Irish. Proper Irish, not Irish-[insert another country]. I lived in Dublin for a number of years before moving to the ‘main land’/ across the water/ the UK in search of work. This year, 50,000 young Irish, just like myself, are likely to emigrate in search of what they hope will be a better life elsewhere. The reason for such emigration being, of course, the dire state of the Irish economy.
What happened with the economy you might ask? The standard answer is that the government is to blame, Bertie/Brian and FF are to blame, the banks are to blame, and the international financial system is to blame but at the heart of who or what is to blame is the sheer greed which overcame many of the Irish people. Mortgaged to the hilt and obsessed with property prices, buy to let and second homes, the island which used to be known for its saints and scholars became synonymous with one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world. I know a lot of my peers agree with me that greed consumed an entire island. We need to move on and try to build a new Ireland which doesn’t constantly look to return to the so-called celtic tiger.
Anyway, rant over, I thought I’d post a photo by James Fennelly from his ‘vanishing Ireland’ gallery. Seems sort of appropriate. Plus beautiful photography.
