Wood was a very important raw material for Scandinavia, and unlike their counterparts on the Continent, Scandinavia did not have the types of visual art on paper or in stone that were found elsewhere until after the introduction of Christianity, so the wood carver was an important and respected craftsman

Sun Voyager — Orvar Atli.


Sculpture info:  Iceland; “Sólfar (The Sun Voyager) is by Jón Gunnar Árnason (1931-1989). The sculpture is designed to resemble a Viking ship. You can find it at the waterfront north of Reykjavik’s City Centre and east of the old harbour.”
